Egg on My Face

No, no not egg on my face, dirt on my furnace filter. For several days I've been noticing that my new furnace (1 year old) has been going "ka THUMP!" each time it kicks on or off. This is very distressing considering what we paid for it. So I called the company that installed it. This morning a very nice service person came to check it out. He pulled out the filter and said "this is your problem" "OH, I feel so embarrassed!" He said that the static from the dust in the filter was causing a charge to pop in the big pipe thing that leaves the furnace. He was right because I popped in another filter and the problem was solved. I used to change the filter every month, but than I started forgetting. He suggested that when his gas and electric bill comes that is his reminder to change his filter. Ouch! Well, he had an easy start to his day.

Hey Marla- it's compliment day. I want you to know I owe you so much for your honesty when I was dealing with mental health issues. Knowing I wasn't alone gave me the courage to seek help. You don't have any idea how much you've helped me!

Marla,
don't feel bad about the furnace. This past summer our air conditioner stopped working. I called the guy to come out and he said, "There's water built up in there."
I asked him if he knew why.

"Yep," he replied. And then he pulled out our filter. I hadn't changed it since last winter. I had not idea that the filter in the furnace was the same one for the air conditioner. It had built up so badly that no air was getting through and so much condensation had gathered that the canister behind the filter was almost completely full of water.

I never forget now because I just have to remember th $60 bill I paid in order to learn that little lesson.

Hi..I didn't know we change the filters but we have oil baseboard heat. We have it serviced once a year.

Glad your problem is settled.

Also, you have a great blog and I have added you to my blog roll. Who knows maybe someday I'll actually get creative through your influence. :)

Thanks for the reminder! I too am terrible at remembering to clean our furnace filter (we have a permanent one that should be cleaned as often as you change yours).
